(the City of the Popes) – VIVIERS THE VIVARAIS
Breakfast on board.
Departure of the boat in the early morning for
Avignon. We will pass by the castles of Beaucaire and Tarascon to reach
Avignon. Avignon was already an important town in the 12th century,
thanks in particular to the Pont d’Avignon which made it possible to
cross the Rhone. With the arrival of the Popes in the 14th century, the
city became a second Rome. After breakfast, optional guided tour of the
City of the Popes, a veritable citadel perched on a rocky pinnacle,
surrounded by its imposing ramparts. The Palace was once home to a
sumptuous court where artists and scholars rubbed shoulders with each
other. Free time in the city centre, then back on board at lunchtime.
Departure of the boat for Viviers and a last look at the city of
Avignon. We will be taking the Donzère canal and passing through the
lock in Bollène. A day steeped in the sailing experience, arrival in
Viviers around 20h30. After dinner, optional guided tour on foot to
allow you to explore this episcopal town which has been known since the
5th century. A town rich in history which possesses the smallest
cathedral in France. Back to the boat through the old streets with
their ancient houses. Overnight stopover.
3rd
Day: VIVIERS – TAIN
L’HERMITAGE THE COTES DU RHONE
Breakfast on board.
Then departure for the optional excursion to the
Ardèche Gorge, Bourg Saint Andéol, across the Plateau des Gras to reach
Vallon Pont d’Arc. Here, the Ardèche has hewn through the cliff, to
construct a grandiose natural arch: “The Pont d’Arc”, 34 metres high.
The itinerary follows the famous Route des Gorges where you can explore
the harmonious meanderings of the river. Numerous panoramic viewpoints
mark the way. We will stop at one of them. They are situated on the
high corniche and offer breathtaking views over the gorge. Back on
board between 12h and 13h in La Voulte. Lunch and cruise up the Rhone,
passing the town of Valence, capital of the middle Rhone. We will pass
the river Isère, one of the tributaries of the Rhone and approach the
town of Tain-l’Hermitage around 16h30. When we arrive, you will have
